Essex spreads its pubs almost one per town, with 17 towns holding 17 between them. Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester, Braintree, Brentwood, Harlow, Southend-on-Sea and Saffron Walden all have their own, which makes this one of the more evenly distributed county estates in the country.
Stansted is the exception to that evenness. The airport pub trades on flight schedules rather than high street hours and prices above the town sites, as airport pubs do across the chain. Two pubs in the county run rooms upstairs, useful for an early departure from Stansted.
The menu is the national one throughout Essex. The traditional breakfast is £5.19, katsu chicken curry is £9.43, and the grilled chicken breast burger is £8.39. The Stansted pub sits well above these; the town pubs sit close to them. See the full menu.
Stansted opens early enough for departing passengers and keeps hours nothing like the rest of the county. The town pubs open for breakfast and close in the evening on ordinary schedules. Each pub's seven day table is on this page, and the opening times guide explains the usual pattern.
No Essex pub takes bookings, the airport included. For a group, the town pubs mid afternoon are straightforward. If you are flying, the Stansted pub is busiest through the early morning departure bank. Rooms are booked separately from the pub. See the hotel list.
